A food technologist helps translate a product idea into a formulation and process that can be assessed for the intended market. Before asking for a quote, describe the product, customer and commercial constraints as clearly as possible.
Explain the target product
State the product format, intended market, packaging concept and desired sensory characteristics. Identify ingredients you want to include or exclude, while leaving room for the specialist to assess feasibility.
Distinguish a preferred outcome from a fixed technical requirement. A target taste, label claim or shelf life may require investigation; it should not be presented as already achievable.
Compare relevant experience
Ask candidates about the product types and processes they have worked with. Request examples they are allowed to discuss and clarify their individual contribution. Experience in one food category does not automatically transfer to every formulation or processing method.

Define the development deliverables
Specify trial records, formula versions, process assumptions, sample review and handover format. Agree how many development rounds are included and who pays for ingredients, external testing and travel.
Define ownership and permitted use of the final formulation in the engagement agreement. Keep scale-up, shelf-life validation and regulatory assessment visible as separate work where they are not included.
